Essential Summer Skin Safety
Now that we are coming out of the winter months and the sun is pouring it's warmth down on us, it's time to get outside. We are ready; especially us here in the north. Emotionally I need it and my skin needs it. I come out of the winter months with a nice pale shade of fish belly white.
As we spend more and more time outside we need to protect our skin. Even those with dark complexions need to protect themselves against the harmful rays of the sun. Hats, sunglasses and some DIY sunscreen free of the dangerous chemicals that the conventional sun screen or sun block contain.
I want to share with you a couple of great recipes. One in which I used the entire time I vacationed in Mexico one year (see recipe #1). I tend to burn real easily (a redhead in the Mexican sun), so this was a great test as to the working power of the DIY sunscreen.
Before we get to the recipes here are some essential oil options for sun protection: Lavender, Helichrysum, Myrrh, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense, Sandalwood. There are others. These are just some of the top oils I found.
**NEVER WEAR CITRUS BASED ESSENTIAL OILS IN THE SUN!!
Essential Summer Skin Recipe #1
Ingredients:
Helichrysum
Lavender
Myrrh
Roman Chamomile
Carrier Oil (Fractionated Coconut oil, Sweet Almond oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, macadamia nut oil, linseed oil, sunflower oil, olive oil)
1-4 or 8 oz glass spray bottle
Directions:
Add 5-10 of each essential oil per 1 oz of carrier oil to a glass spray bottle.
Apply every 2-3 hours or as needed.
Essential Summer Skin Recipe #2 (Waterproof)
Ingredients:
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup sweet almond oil
1/4 cup beeswax
2 Tbsp Shea Butter
1 tsp Vitamin E
2 Tbsp Zinc Oxide powder
12 drops of Helichrysm **optional add drops of some of the other oils listed above.
Glass container(s) with lid. Mason jars are great to use. I use them for just about everything.
Makes about 1 cup
Directions:
Place a saucepan with two inches of water on the stove over medium/low heat.
Combine everything EXCEPT the zinc powder and essential oils in a glass container or measuring cup that will hold ~2 cups. A slightly bigger container will help avoid spills.
Place the glass container in the saucepan with warm water and stir contents until ingredients melt. *If using another jar to keep in, pour the melted mixture in and once it's cooled a little but is still liquid stir in the Helichrysum (and other oils if adding) and zinc. Use a pot holder or towel on jar when holding it. IT WILL STILL BE HOT.
Apply every 2-3 hours or as needed.
